Our new embassy in the UK, what a billion bucks gets you

October 25, 2010

Philadelphia Firm Selected to Design U.S. Embassy in London – NYTimes.com.

Given that we are in the worst economic climate in the history of the universe, to paraphrase Obama, should we truly be spending $1 billion dollars on a new embassy in the United Kingdom?  Maybe we need it, but do we need it right now?  We already have an embassy in London – is there something wrong with the current one that we just can not wait until we have a better economic

Just spews "America" doesn't it?

climate?  Who knows, but check out what we are paying for.

According to the State department’s web site, the requirements for the new building were “the goal of creating a modern, welcoming, timeless, safe and energy efficient embassy for the 21st century.”  Modern?  Check.  Welcoming?  Uh, not really.  Timeless?  A lot of people thought the designs of the ’70s would be timeless, so I will give a fail on this one.  Safe?  Nothing says safe like a ton of glass.  Energy efficient?  That’s all that really matters isn’t it?

The site will also be home to ponds and a nice park for people to walk around and view the beauty and august stature of our big ugly glass cube with weird plastic crystal thingies hanging off.  This thing might be cool if it was a private office building, but this see through Lego nightmare is supposed to represent America.  But what do I know, the design firm, KieranTimberlake, has won tons of awards for design so I am just not smart enough to see how beautiful it actually is.

Thank you Hillary, $1 billion smackers for the outstandingly horrendous transparent whack-an-embassy when our economy is in the gutter.  Hey at least its gonna provide jobs…to British workers.

That is one ugly building, I have to say. For a billion dollar bills, you would think they could come up with something that looks a little less like a giant cube of glass shards.

I just don’t get how that is supposed to be timeless? I guess ugly can be timeless.

Like I said in the post, you and I must not be cultured enough to appreciate its beauty.

Just remember, these are the same people (i.e., liberal, artsy- fartsy type) that think it is art to depict someone pissing on Jesus Christ. Need I say more!!!!

After your religious reference I think I figured it out. In Medina, the muslims have the Kaba, a big black cube that they come to worship at and walk around in circles for their pilgrimage. Considering the growing population of muslims and their increasing biligerence in the UK, this must be some subtle hypnotic attempt to show we are actually kindred spirits. Wanna see what it looks like click here, I guess you could call it timeless, if you think a cube is something special.

It’s kind of a “2001 – A Space Odyssey” type of thing. We just need a couple of apes throwing a bone into the air to make it complete.

The Kaba most certainly. The only thing it has going for it is it is somewhat menacing, not sure that fits in a religious setting, but we are talking about Islam.

As far as “our” new embassy, it looks like a melting ice-cube, which might be symbolic of America’s future. See you hoyty-toyty elitist architects, I can find meaning out of your crap too.
