The power to ignore reality

November 19, 2010

Liberals have an amazing ability to ignore the facts of life.  Unlike the television show of the same name, our world is not composed of 30 minute vignettes of the trials and tribulations of a group of girls living in the suburbs, it is decidedly the opposite.  Daily, innocent people are being reduced to mounds of indecipherable flesh, innocent people are losing jobs and benefits and even more innocent people are finding that their government has greater concerns than the well-being of its populace.  But if you pay attention to the most pressing concerns facing Americans (according to liberals), there would be issues such as whether or not gays should be allowed to openly serve in the military, whether or not children of illegal aliens should get citizenship, how much control the government should have over the food we put in our body and how restaurants are allowed to market that food, and lastly, should caffeine be allowed in alcoholic beverages.

Is this just blatant ignorance on the part of the progressives.  Do they not understand the looming tax-increase is the biggest concern of every business in America?  Do they even care?  I am going to suggest they do not.  This power to ignore reality is shared by only one other group of people on the planet, children.  Now I am not going to go into a long diatribe of how liberals are like little children, mainly because that has been done more than a few times (primarily because the similarities are striking), but I am going to look at why they are able to ignore facts that look them right in the face.

In the most basic breakdown of philosophy, you can divide people into two schools of thought, realists and subjectivists.  The realist view of the world can be summed up most easily by this simple statement – existence exists.  That is, there is truth in the universe.  Physical things are actually part of reality, even if you don’t know it.  It answers the question, “If a tree falls in the woods and nobody observes it, did the tree actually fall?” with a resounding yes.  Morally, realists believe there is a morality in the universe, and it is independent of the observer, like all other physical laws.

Conversely, subjectivists, answer the tree falling in the woods question with a whimpering no.  In fact, they might not even believe the person asking the question exists.  He could just be a construct of their subconscious mind.  Subjectivists believe truth and law is arbitrary, and they definitely believe morality is arbitrary.  To quote Dr. Jonathan Dolhenty from his essay on Philosophical Realism: [his emphasis]

Subjectivism also undermines empirical science, undermines our entire concept of jurisprudence, and undermines any attempt to promote a human and humane morality. We are all subject to the whims of the moment and are all victims of the latest public poll.

This is amazingly liberating if you are the one writing the poll.  Imagine, never being responsible to some universal truth.  Never having a code of morals to answer to.  You can do whatever the hell you want.  Until that damn reality you keep refusing rears its ugly head and bites you in the ass.  France and Greece are currently going through this ass gnawing.  Why?  Because for the longest time they denied reality.  Regardless of the evidence their own governments told them about the un-sustainability of their entitlement programs, it was always much easier to live in the here and now and shove off the problem on someone else at some other time.  They denied facts.

Multiculturalism is proving to be a resounding failure in Europe as well, because the realities of human nature and the tribal desire were denied by progressive politicians for years.  We are suffering from similar problems in America.  But are they problems to an American liberal?  No and yes.  Yes because in their view, we aren’t doing more to encourage multiculturalism.  Patriotism is taboo (unless you wave a Mexican flag, then its awesome), nationalism reminds liberals of Nazi Germany, daring to suggest we stop being one of the few countries in the world WITHOUT an official language is deemed racist.

Co2 is dangerous, although it is the primary gas expelled during animal respiration.  Nuclear power is evil and will kill us all, because of a poorly made movie in the 1970’s starring a women who sided with the North Vietnamese (they never seem to have a good argument for why they want to be like France in every respect EXCEPT nuclear energy).

Morality is for backwoods, religious freaks, not for every day people.  Moral relativism is the way all normal people should think.  Why are we allowed to say Iran and North Korea can’t have nukes when we are the only country to have nuked someone?  Who says marriage is between a man and a woman?  Despite their cries to the contrary, moral relativism is the poster boy for a slippery slope, because as soon as you say someone’s behavior is wrong, you are enforcing your morality on them.  So for a true moral relativist, anything goes.  Have sex with animals, children, fruit baskets, whatever, you are not allowed to impose morals on someone else.  Abortions are chump change in the world of true moral relativism.  Who is to say murder is morally wrong?  Or rape?  Or a hate-crime?  Aren’t we just being unfair by imposing our morals and societal standards on the murderer, rapist, and Klansman?  Obviously, this is ridiculous – denying reality usually is.

This is why the most notorious dictators and emperors in the past are usually known by their sexual proclivities and sub-human treatment of the populace.  When you are surrounded by people who are only allowed to agree with you, you tend to think anything goes.  They lived in a one man world of moral relativism, the only responsiblity they had for their actions was to themselves.  No wonder so many believed themselves to be gods.

Liberals are subjectivists pure and simple.  They do not see a problem with their socialist ideology because to them, despite all evidence to the contrary, socialism works.  It hasn’t worked in the past because “no one has done it right” yet.  My favorite subjectivist statement about communism, “Communism would work if it weren’t for human nature.”  Oh really?  What a genius comment.  To translate for comedic effect, “My favorite philosophy of humans would work, if it weren’t for humans.”  Despite this tacit admission of socialism’s failure, they sure as hell are gonna keep plugging away.  Like the theme song of the television shows says, “The Facts of Life are all about you.”

Very true. It all goes back to the difference in opinion that Liberals believe people are inherently bad and it takes government to make them good whereas Conservative feel people are not inherently bad and that government makes them bad by making them lazy and dependent upon someone else. A Liberal will agree with this statement: “If Bob makes $200,000.00 per year he has made enough money. He doesn’t need any more so give it to the government.”

Well said. I couldn’t fit that point into the piece, about the view of evil in humans, but you make it succinctly enough for me. =)

It still amazes me how many people still want to give Obama a pass and just chuck it up to naivete’. Bull.Ideologues aren’t naive, they aren’t ignorant, they do understand.Which makes it all the more sickening to know the negative fallout is by design.

Yep. I am way past the Obama is just a moron stage. You couldn’t accidentally be as inept in handling the important issues of this country as he is.

Liberals live in an ideological world in which government can solve all of the world’s problems, so they continue to push for big government solutions. But the fact is that whenever the government tries to solve a problem it only gets worse. Realists understand this and believe that the individual holds the key to problem solving through self reliance.
It is this self reliance that threatens the existance of the liberals in power because if the people do not need the government to succeed they do not need the liberals to help them succeed. And that is what they are most worried about.

      Interesting take.

I don’t think the liberal success hinges on government success. In fact, I think a lot of the liberal agenda hinges on government failure, as long as they can continue to convince the masses that government is the only entity that can fix such failure – i.e. we need more government to fix the mess government caused in the first place. Case in point – TARP, stimulus, bailouts, Obamacare, No Child Left Behind, Department of Homeland Security, etc.

Yes, you liberal wankers, I know Bush is responsible for three on that list, and your point is? I never said the GOP is conservative, they are just less progressive than the Dems.

        Bingo.

In talking to liberals, you’ll find many who are convinced that GW Bush’s failures mean that conservatism/free-markets have failed. When you point out just how progressive something like NCLB is, they inevitably trail off into some other intellectual dead end.

Debating with leftists is mind-numbing at times.

Got to love the penchant liberals have for circular arguments.

Never underestimate the power of self-delusion. If a person gets some sort of pay off from believing that the sky is beneath and the ground above, they can do it.

It is amazing to me how a person can observe a simple occurrence a thousand times and not understand it. C02 is what we breathe out. It is what plants breathe in. It is a simple yet robust system. Now, all of a sudden 1/2 of it is bad and should be eliminated. OK, them first, no fair exhaling.

The same people who are staunch believers in evolution are the ones who want to protect all of the disappearing species. They observe we are losing species and always have yet profess to believe we are gaining them.

In fairness, it is a human condition. It isn’t limited to Liberals, they are just better at it because they have a lot more practice.

Hey thanks for visiting and commenting. Yeah, methinks the average person does not understand the theory of evolution very well.

Thanks for the blogroll add, I will return the favor.
