New photos of Chinese stealth fighter

January 5, 2011

Looks a lot like the F-22

Apparently the Chinese are working on a new stealth fighter, what would be referred to as a fifth generation fighter (advanced stealth).  This fighter, seen in the picture, would be designated the J-20, and as you can see, it is freaking huge.

Many analysts claim this would give it a larger payload and range than Western stealth fighters like the F-22 Raptor, but I would have to disagree with them.  The Chinese are still years behind in propulsion technology (like jet engines) and are still relying on Russian engines (or Chinese made variants) for the majority of their planes.  Russia has never been a great designer of jet engines, making large, inefficient designs that never lived up to the design goals.  In my opinion, this bird is so large for one reason, it has crappy engines, requiring them to be larger to produce the same amount of thrust as a more efficient engine.  This leads to the opposite conclusion of analysts, that it will have a smaller payload than Western fighters and a lower range.

The Chinese government has not made any attempt to remove these pictures from the internet, so one

Big ass bird

must conclude they want them to be out there – reminiscent of the Soviet military parades used to dupe the western intelligence forces into believing the Russians were building equipment more advanced than were actually true.  That is not to say we should not take these photos seriously, they allude to the seriousness with which China is trying to bridge the technology gap between our fighter aircraft and their own.  Maybe we can get Secretary of Defense Gates to lift the cap on the F-22 at only 187 fighters, cause if China actually ends up perfecting one of these birds, they will no doubt be able to make many more than us.

So a little wake-up call for us folks who thought China was just hanging out on the other side of the world minding its own business.  They are trying to reach parity with us, and by no means is it for defense.

The bad thing is that UGLY kills you just as dead as beautiful. Like they say, “Beauty is skin deep, but ugly goes clear to the bone.”

@innominatus and justfacts – they do make ugly planes, although the Su-27 is pretty sexy.

The beauty of this is we in America are paying for the development of this jet. A jet they want to use to shoot down our jets.

Yeah, it is pretty ironic that we borrow from folks who are building up a military to counter ours. Did I say irony? I meant, freaking moronic.

One thing about it being so big, it should be easier to hit. Maybe we should sneak a F-22 Raptor in through the back door and take big bird out. 😉

Seriously though, we need to keep an eye on China. Clearly, they do not have our best interests at heart.

On a related note, Obama’s two guys dedicated to China are leaving in the next year. No comment on whether or not this is good or not.

Wow. They are working on an aircraft carrier and and anti-aircraft carrier missile, too. In 20 years or so China will be a big military threat.

Yeah, I see that as a viable time frame. Not sure as to their need for an anti-ship missile, many of those available on the world market.

It doesn’t matter how pretty or how ugly a plane is…it still boils down to the skill of the pilot. We have possibly one of the ugliest fighter planes in the world…A-10 Warthog, but in the right hands, it’s a tank killing machine. Another ugly plane we had was the F-111 Aardvark. Even when the wings were swept back for supersonic flight, it was still butt-ugly. But it was a good ground support fighter.

We still have the best trained group of fighter pilots in the world coupled with the most technologically advanced systems in the world which spells doom for anyone who thinks they casn play with the big dogs.

Thanks for visiting and the comment. =)

I agree with your overall sentiment, and I will never knock the men and women of our armed forces nor their level of training, but sheer numbers can offset skill and technological superiority, as we proved in WWII. The Sherman was a death trap, fielded by American tankers who had little to no combat experience prior to Normandy. We were going against one of the most deadly set of tanks in the world at the time fielded by a highly experienced, highly trained professional tank corps that was the model for the world. Yet we won through sheer numbers. This is not to take away from our Army and our soldiers (I would never do that, I was an infantryman), but the European campaign was a numbers game for our Army, we had more tanks and more men, plain and simple.

The Chinese have more men and tanks and in the future, more planes than we could ever dream of fielding, and as the Korean War proved, they are not afraid of casualties. We need to take China seriously as a future threat – capping our fighter strength at such a low number is dangerous.

By the way, I don’t think the A-10 is ugly at all. Anything that deadly is sexy just on principle.

Most people think the A-10 is ugly. I don’t, but that is because I’ve seen it fly and have seen it fly over just fifty feet over head. It’s a scary sight. You don’t even hear it until it’s right on top of you.

You’re right about the numbers game. I didn’t think it all the way through. Must have been that 12 hour overnight drive back from S. Fla last night. 😉 Plus finding out I got a speeding ticket in S. Car. a couple of weeks ago unbeknownst to me.

I hold a lot of love for the close-support craft, and you are right, an A-10 is a scary sight right above your head. I also like the Tornado, which I have seen up close and personal in Europe.

That blows about the speeding ticket. =(

Even though it’s going to cost me at least twice what the fine is, I’m going to fight it. It was an unmanned photo speed trap. And the picture of the driver wasn’t me.

I fought the law and I won. He he he.

Also, adding you to my blog roll.

Good man. Don’t let those crazy bastards get away with, oh I don’t know, disposing of a little thing called “due process”.

Think s for the blog roll love, I shall return the favor. =)
