Fleece’s Faves – “Mercy” edition
Something the US Military does not often get enough credit for is the numerous humanitarian efforts we participate in, and most often lead, around the world. One such vessel that allows us to provide help to people on this Earth is my Fave this week, the USNS Mercy.
The Mercy is a hospital ship, the largest in the world. Compared to other ships in the US naval inventory, she is the third largest, bested only by the two “super-carrier” class of ships Enterprise and Nimitz. The Mercy’s overall length is 894 feet, and her beam (that is width) is 105 feet, giving her a displacement of a whopping 69,000 tons.
The Mercy’s size is not what makes this ship so impressive, it is her capabilities that truly do so. Of note, she carries no weapons at all, and to fire on this ship is considered an act of war. The Mercy is not a war-fighting ship, she is designed to support our troops during amphibious landings. When not in combat, she is frequently deployed to “natural disaster” zones to provide much-needed hospital facilities – often she is the only hospital operational in a disaster area, due to loss of power and or other problems with land-based facilities.
The Mercy sports 1000 hospital beds, making her the 28th largest hospital in the United States, larger than hospitals such as Johns Hopkins, Cedar-Sinai and Bellevue. Her on-board facilities include: four X-rays, one CT scan unit, a dental suite, an optometry and lens laboratory, a physical therapy center, a pharmacy, an angiography suite and two oxygen-producing plants. Mercy is capable of maintaining up to 5,000 units of blood. (from the USNS Mercy factsheet) When deployed, the Mercy houses over 1200 hospital and support personnel to man all these functions. It is easy to see, she truly is a floating full service hospital.
Her functions are secondary to her results, which are staggering. In her most recent deployment dubbed Pacific Partnership 2010, the Mercy:
…served as one of the platforms for a humanitarian and civic assistance mission to Southeast Asia. During the Mercy portion of the mission, more than 100,000 people were treated in Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Timor-Leste. The ship’s personnel distributed more than 58,000 pairs of eyeglasses and sunglasses, and provided dental care for more than 12,000 patients. In addition, the Mercy team conducted more than 24,000 hours of information exchanges in the four countries visited. The team also participated in 62 community service projects ashore, the majority at schools and orphanages.
58,000 pairs of glasses?!? That is incredible considering the mission was only 6 months.
Much love goes out to the doctors and corpsmen (that’s a silent “p'” Mr. President”) who serve on this vessel; your actions and service show to the world what America is truly about, honor, compassion, and like your ship’s most apropos name, Mercy.

New to Fleece’s Faves
sitting on the edge of the sandbox, biting my tongue – in spite of the uber-long name that is a pain in the butt to type (no wonder NoOneofAnyImport likes her) she is an excellent writer with an excellent view of the world, her latest post is about Motherhood and how many women in this age dither on the subject
Thanks for the mention, Fleece. I always learn so much from your Fleece’s Faves. That photo with the rainbow is incredible!
Your are welcome. =)
That photo is pretty cool isn’t it?
You made me laugh out loud! No wonder I like her, ha! Whenever I link to her, I end up calling her Missy Sandbox for short. She is quite good, and I’m glad you’ve discovered her.
And thanks for the link and the compliment.
Excellent choice for a subject, BTW. The USS Comfort was at the pier when we drove past the other day, and those floating hospitals are indeed an impressive sight.
Cheers buddy
Linda
I found her through your blog, so thank you. =)
When you said ‘pain in the butt to type’ I thought you were going to point and laugh at me. Mine fits the category. What was I thinking? 🙂
Thanks for the inclusion, sir.
My pleasure. Yeah, there are a couple of you screwballs with difficult names, lol. =)
Appreciate it Fleece…remember to scrape those Ron Paul stickers and American flags off your bumper…wouldn’t want to be under suspicion as a possible Domestic Terrorist now, would you? 😉
Mike
Plus I am ex-military, so I am definitely a threat. =(
Thanks much for the link Colin. I like the “p” dig on the POTUS. Oh, BTW, I’m even worse than you. Ex-military, ex-postal service and in a local slant where we somebody whack out, ex-Ford. Maybe that’s why that damn black helicopter is always hovering over me!
My pleasure, and LMAO about the helicopter. =)
Thanks for the link. I like how you showcase the things that make our military what it is.
You are most welcome and thank you for the compliment. =)
Thank you so much for the link and the starred review!
Yeah, I know about the name. I can’t figure out how to abbreviate myself.
I’m going to print the picture of USNS Mercy for my kids. A ship, that is a military ship and a hospital. That will spin their domes.
It was my pleasure to link you, I truly enjoyed your Dithering Motherhood piece. =)
Cool about your kids. Its good for our children to learn about American exceptionalism, fore they sure aren’t getting it from our schools or our “leaders”.
You da man, Fleece.
Also, thanks man. Glad you got a kick out of it.
Also, I hereby change the title of my blog to “The Happy Sunshine Fun Place of Political Right-Wingery Leanings, Half-Naked Sort of Famous Womens, Observations of the Cultural Comings And Goings, Technological Advantageousness and Rocks and Rolling Musical Interpretations”.
That’s not obnoxious at all, right?
😉
Nooo…you da man!
Uhh, as far as the new name goes, ummm…sounds good?
Thanks for the link and for the information. I am embarrassed to admit that I had no idea the US Navy had these types of ships. What an impressive vessel she is!
Yeah, well the press is too keen on reporting when our military does good stuff, so…go figure. =)
Thanks for the link, as well as the info on the Mercy. I had no idea about her capabilities.
My pleasure my friend. =)
Thanks for the link. Interesting about the Mercy.
You are most welcome. =)
Same here for the linky…and a nice change of pace for a postivie view of what we are all about. Sadly, we are often misunderstood.
That’s for sure, but we are evil damn imperialists, so its to be expected. =P
Thanks for the link(s), Fleece. (Off-subject: Phils are 5-1 after clobbering Mets 11-0 behind Doc today. 2nd in NL in runs scored. My misgivings about the offense may have been somewhat misplaced.)
Yeah, and my Braves suck, lol. I guess that’s why they play the games, lol.
Thank you for the link. I appreciate it.
You are most welcome.
