Poll results show Egypt ready to embrace Sharia and Muslim Brotherhood

April 27, 2011

Poll: Most Egyptians want Qur’an as source of laws – Arab News.

After all the turmoil and hub-bub in Egypt, it appears that Egyptians will get exactly what they want.  Ohh, if you thought I was going to say democracy, you are seriously deluded. In a recent poll by Pew researchers, Egyptians favored a strict adherence to the Koran:

…62 percent of Egyptians believe laws in their country should strictly follow the teachings of the Qur’an, though 27 percent thought it was enough that the laws reflect Islam’s general values and principles.

Amazingly, Arab News is obviously into the long practiced tactic of getting out of a poll what they want instead of what the poll actually tells them, because prior to this line, they said this:

Overall, the results of the poll paint a picture of Egyptians as a people who prefer religious moderation over extremism and prize democratic values even if they come at the risk of some political instability.

Strict adherence to the Koran equals religious moderation and democratic values?  My understanding of the English language must be really poor.

Its not all bad news, well maybe it is.  I mean another country embracing Sharia law can’t be a good thing, especially if you are a women, a homosexual or a religious minority.  Interestingly, the poll did ask about Egyptian’s view of Christians:

the poll showed that only 36 percent of those questioned believe it is “very important” for Christians and other minorities to freely practice their religions

About women, this is from the Pew website:

Relatively few (39%) give high priority to women having the same rights as men. Women themselves are more likely to say it is very important that they are assured equal rights than are men (48% vs. 30%).

Only 48% of women think it is very important they have equal rights with men?  When less than half of half of your population feels they should be treated the same as the other half, methinks the average Egyptian has no clue what freedom or democracy is actually about.

Not to worry though, I am sure the Obama administration will be pleased by this next part from Arab news:

Islamic parties are expected to make a significant showing in the crucial vote, with 50 percent of people saying it was “very important” for religious parties to be part of a future government and as much 37 percent have a “very favorable” view of the Muslim Brotherhood, the country’s largest and best organized Islamic group.

Yay, for the Muslim Brotherhood!  Remember, Obama invited them to his Cairo speech, to the chagrin of our former Egyptian allies?  I’m sure they will just serve as an advisory role to the new government, they won’t actually participate.  Maybe they can be the new President’s “hate czar” or something.

Oh yeah, lets not forget Israel:

The poll results also showed that more than half of all Egyptians would like to see the 1979 peace agreement with Israel annulled, highlighting the deep unpopularity of the treaty, which is central to US policy in the region and was scrupulously adhered to by Mubarak.

I am sure they just want a new peace agreement right?  Its not like they hate Jews over there is it?  Apparently Israel isn’t the only focus of their hate, despite Obama’s genuflecting Cairo speech:

The United States, Egypt’s strongest foreign backer since the mid-1970s, continued to garner low approval ratings, with only 20 percent of Egyptians seeing it in a positive light, up from 17 percent in 2010.

1 in 5 Egyptians view us in a less than favorable light?  Obama, get back over there and give another speech!  They need to understand we totally love Islam, get NASA over there too.  What the hell you been doing, I thought we were gonna reach out and show the Muslim world how much we care and embrace them?  I guess this is another policy he is an utter failure in.  Or…they really hate us and no amount of ass-kissing is gonna change their minds.  I can’t decide.  =(

I’m sure that Mrs. Obama won’t mind adjusting to sharia law. Hubby will be delighted.

So where is the MSM on this. I mean they were so much in support of this “remarkable” revolution. Not so much now…

That boring news story is over, on to the next groundbreaking event, an anachronistic royal wedding that I am supposed to actually care about.
