The ten sexiest cars ever made

April 16, 2011

What is it about a car that is so appealing?  Is it the freedom car ownership promises?  Is it the home without a home that is a car, a place of refuge and familiarity one takes with them wherever they go?  Or is it how a car is an outward expression of the person within?  I think it is all three, but the last one I give extra credence to.

A car says who we are.  A mini-van says you have a family, a sports-sedan says you want performance but also some comfort, and so on.  We can often get an idea of who a person is just by the car they drive, that’s why it is so jilting to see a dude driving a VW Cabriolet (it should be a 20-something chick), or so damn hot to see a woman driving a Porsche 911, they are swapping our perceptions of the typical owner of the “ride”, with obvious different results.

So what makes a car sexy?  It’s a combination of flowing lines with an underlying sense of caged fury that emotes an animus in an intangible object.  A sexy car seems to be alive.  But it is also just pure beauty – sculptures of metal, plastic and rubber that equal and sometimes surpass the works of Michelangelo, Donatello and Ghiberti.  Is it no wonder that most of the cars on this list come from Italy?  Enough preamble, let’s get going.

10.  The Mercedes 300SL – This would be German sexy, which does not happen very often.  The smooth lines, the low-stance, and of course the gull-wing doors all speak to the beauty of this 1950’s racing classic.

9.  The Lamborghini Countach 5000 – this car is the epitome of sexy.  The long sweeping lines, the huge deep dish wheels and rubber, and its aggressive stance, this car just looks like it wants to be driven fast.  To me it looks like a tiger waiting to pounce on an unsuspecting Smart Car, uhh, I mean zebra.

8. The 1969 Camaro SS – probably gonna get some hate on this one, it’s the only American muscle car on the list, but its my list so bite me.  Sorry, when I think of a sexy muscle car, the 69 Camaro is the first car to pop in my mind, and it doesn’t get pushed aside by any other.  I know people love the GTO or the Cuda, but compared to this puppy, there is no contest.  Perfect lines, an aggressive stance, and the sense of raw power, those are the keys to the sexiness of this car.

7.  The de Tomaso Pantera – Uhh, look at the picture, do I really need to add any comments?

6.  The Ferrari F355 Challenge – simple race car beauty.  This is my favorite car of all time, but it is not the sexiest.  It is damn sexy though.

5.  The 1996 Ruf Porsche 911 Turbo – This car is a freaking beast!  The first all-wheel drive Porsche, the last air-cooled 911, the 993 (all 911’s have a series number, to easier distinguish which 911 you are talking about) is the sexiest one of them all.  Huge wheels, huge wheel flares, the squat stance, the huge whale-fin, this is another car that just looks like it is begging to be driven hard.

4.  The Maserati MC12 Corsa – No other car exhibits that “draped on” quality of beauty that humans so love, hint, that’s why we like beautiful women in evening gowns.  The curves are sexy, but muted, it leaves to the imagination the beauty of what is underneath.

3.  The Ferrari FXX – this car exhibits the other quality of sexy, the no-nonsense quality that makes military jets so beautiful.  Plus you have to love the notched nose air intake, an homage to the Ferrari 250 GTO, a beauty in its own right.

2.  The 1996 Lamborghini Diablo SE30 “Jota” – this car is the sheer embodiment of sexy.  It is unbelievably beautiful.  I have always loved the Diablo, its lines are unmatched by no other.  That long, slow, sweeping curve from the front quarter-panel to the tail-lights is evocative of speed, grace and, of course, sexy.

1.  The Mercedes CLK-GTR – this car is drop dead sexy.  It is of course a race car, which makes its sexiness more staggering, because a race car has no unnecessary lines, no frills, no extra anything that is not for a utilitarian purpose.  Gorgeous to say the least, the wheel wells do the trick for me, it makes this beauty look like it is hunkering down, a bull digging in to charge, it is speed incarnate.

That’s my list.  I am sure many if not all of you would disagree with my views, but that is the beauty of automobiles, they are expressions of our personalities.  Please do comment, whether you like my list or not.  Let’s hear what you think is the sexiest car out there.

Interesting list, but I would add that comparing American muscle cars to some of the exotics is comparing apples to oranges. The American cars were affordable to most people, the exotics are not.

You are correct, but that makes American cars that are actually sexy even more impressive.

The flickr sites are from a couple of car shows in the Syracuse,NY. area.

The small dog is a miniature schnauzer and is just about three.

Great photos! And a ton of em, good stuff.

I used to have a mutt that had some schnauzer in her, what a great dog she was. =)

Beautiful cars but I’ll stick with a couple of American classic: the 1957 T-Bird and the 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk.

    • April 16, 2011 6:11 pm

Like I said, to each his own. I can dig the T-Bird and the Golden Hawk (had to look that one up, lol) but I would consider them more indicative of the “classic” look. Definitely pretty cars, don’t get me wrong.

I don’t think I could even make a list – just too many to pick from. I like the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione or a Ferrari F40. For a muscle car, I’m biased toward a Mustang Boss 429. If only I could find a way to make an SR-71 Blackbird roadworthy, I’d make that my favorite. Great list anyway, you can’t really go wrong.

    • April 16, 2011 8:53 pm

You are right, you can’t go wrong, it was more just a fun exercise. =)

Oooh, I just looked up the Alfa, beautiful car and very sexy. Definitely worth an honorable mention.

Nice cars. I’m partial to the Camaro, too. Although I also like the car that passed me one night on the Autobahn. I was doing about 130 MPH when this car, a ’76 Ferrari 308 GTB passed me like I was standing still. Scared the crap out of me.

Ahh, the 308. I love practically all of the Ferrari mid-engine V-8 cars, hence my favorite, the F355. The nicest Ferrari I have ever seen on the road was an F-50 heading the opposite direction on I-95, I almost wrecked trying to get a look at it, lmao.

No Mustang in your list? Hmmmmm…

    I admit a bias as I have a 2000 Mustang convertible.

  7. April 17, 2011 9:52 am

I’m also surprised by the absence of a Mustang. My father-in-law used to collect them. For some reason DH was given a Mustang when he first learned to drive.

    • April 17, 2011 10:00 am

Funny y’all should mention Mustangs. My grandparents had a series of them over the years, after they traded in their ’57 Thunderbird. In fact, when I went to get my driver’s license, I drove their ’71 Mach 1. The tester couldn’t believe it belonged to my grandparents.

Sorry folks, it all about personal taste. While I do not begrudge the attraction of certain Mustangs (the Mustang II a notable exception) as one can probably figure out, I have a passion for Italian styled cars, specifically from the coachworks of Pininfarina.

But again, that’s the beauty of cars, we all have our loves and our passions.

@Always on Watch – I gotta admit that is a pretty sex ride, nice pic =)

    Ferrari 308/328
    2nd Gen Dodge Charger
    Jaguar E-Type
    3rd Gen Mazda RX-7
    Jeep CJ-2A
    1966-1993 Alfa Romeo Spider
    1966 Chrysler Imperial Convertible
    Ford GT40
    Lotus 7
    Speed Racer’s Mach 5

I have owned or own three of these. (Hint: None were the Ferrari. Okay, or the Mach 5).

    • April 17, 2011 8:42 pm

I can dig the Ferrari’s but of the earlier 3 series, I prefer the 348.

If that’s the batmobile RX7, I agree completely.

      A Jeep? Seriously?

I was seriously contemplating putting the GT40 on the list, it would have made it if it was the 11 sexiest vehicles.

Your three? I would guess the Charger, RX7 and Jeep.

      • April 18, 2011 12:57 pm

Wow, you’re good. I still have the CJ-2A (sexy in its own way, lol). I sold the RX-7 a few years ago (in Batmobile black) once I realized that while it was affordable(ish) to buy, parts were becoming nearly Porsche-pricey. I sold a 1969 Charger around the same time because it was basically too valuable to keep on the street (I don’t have a driveway never mind a garage). In fact, the day it was being shipped to its new owner I noticed somebody had hit the front quarter panel a day or two earlier. That just confirmed my decision! Such is life a stone’s throw from Washington, DC.

      • April 18, 2011 6:53 pm

I always liked that series of RX7, and the rotary engine is pretty cool even though it sounds like a lawn-mower. The charger is sweet, I love American muscle, I truly do, but I had to be intellectually honest with my sexy post – the muscle car is not sexy, that isn’t the quality it is even looking for, its like calling a man “cute”, it ain’t a compliment.

I can dig a jeep, but doesn’t it suck when keeping your babies has to be decided by market forces?

Will always love my 1968 AMC AMX. Fire engine red with two wide white racing stripes over the top from front to back. 390 v8 with Hurst 4 speed manual shift. Awesome Power/Weight ratio. Ordered it from the factory for $3800 back in 68. The first 2 seat American made unibody sports car since the 55 Vette. Mine was the 3672 one made as attested to by a plaque on the dash. Would give my eye-teeth to have it back today. Oh well.

  10. April 18, 2011 10:32 pm

Props for knowing of the CLK-GTR.

I’d throw in the Vector W8 and the NSX Type-R. The Gullwing is spot on!

    • April 19, 2011 2:25 am

Awww man, I can’t believe I forgot the NSX, that is one of my all time favorite sports cars, and sexy as hell, I would have put it in the top 5 if I wasn’t a moron.

I thought about the Vector (the W8 and the M12), but something about its lines are wrong; basically, it has a huge ass, and not in a good way. Definitely would rate as quasi-sexy.

      • April 19, 2011 10:11 pm

You can be excused for NSX omission.

I think the Vector is quite sexy time:

        Also… Ferrari Daytona!

      • April 19, 2011 10:49 pm

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to own a vector lol, I just think it is too anti-septic, its sterile, all business. My opinion of course so…

I can dig a Daytona, you know I should have said a slant nose 911, they are sexy too. I guess the point is,10 ain’t a long enough list, haha.

You didn’t put my MGC in the group. 2 seater, fast back Austin 3000 engine with Supercharger, top speed 202 mph, road stability at 200 rated over 90% as excellent. Picked up many unsuspecting… 0 to 60 in 4.6 seconds–0 to 100 in 8.4 seconds. Automobile was never rated by any magazine because I had the only Automatic in the country and the only one with a supercharger. Surprised many vets back in 1970. Its only setback—it could not outrun the Pontiac Judge with a blower. PS: I like the ones you posted also.
